EVINRUDE'S ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP
Global Warming is very real and no argument about the cause is going to change that fact. Since the start of the industrial revolution, sea levels have steadily been rising due to polar melt, our ozone layer has taken a beating and the average global temperature has increased measurably. Our propensity to litter and pollute has had a huge impact on delicate Eco-systems both on land and in our oceans and waterways. As a species, we need to act in manner which will reverse the damage already caused and protect our planet for generations to come.
This is no easy task because it demands responsibility, commitment and a genuine attempt to improve our environment. In turn, this means you need to take action and not compromise on your objectives.
As a member of a family of brands devoted to innovation, it’s no surprise Evinrude is leading the industry in clean products manufactured in the most environmentally responsible plants. Evinrude E-TEC® engines were the very first direct-injection engines allowed on the pristine waters of the highly-regulated Boden see and the first and only outboards to receive the prestigious U.S. EPA Clean Air Excellence Award. We’ve pioneered the first device to quantify on-water exhaust emissions and led cutting-edge research on advanced next-generation biofuels. We’re not just producing the cleanest technology combustion outboards, but also leading international efforts to minimize emissions, influencing biofuels policy, and setting benchmarks for sustainable manufacturing processes.
ONE ENGINE, ONE CALIBRATION, ONE WORLD CERTIFIED
Across the entire product line. Evinrude engines meet the most stringent environmental regulations. Unlike many competitive outboard engine brands, we are proud to sell compliant engines globally. Evinrude only sells clean engines across the globe while many competitors sell high-emissions engines where regulations are not required. US EPA, California Air Resources Board, Environment Canada, European Union, Bodensee, Australia, United Arab Emirates and everywhere else your boating adventures take you. No smoke, no smell, no kidding.
PROUD RECIPIENT OF THE EPA CLEAN AIR EXCELLENCE AWARD
Evinrude was the first and only outboard engine ever to receive the prestigious EPA Clean Air Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Evinrude E-TEC outboard engine achieved over a 90% reduction in exhaust emissions compared to conventional older- technology outboards. Our carbon monoxide emissions at idle are typically lower by a factor of 50 to 100 times relative to competitive outboard engines. The key to these achievements centers on our proprietary direct fuel injection system which allows precise control of the fuel delivery to maximize power and torque while significantly minimizing emissions and fuel consumption.
OPERATING ON THE MOST PRISTINE LAKES IN THE WORLD
Evinrude E-TEC engines were the very first direct fuel injection engines allowed on the pristine waters of the Bodensee, an alpine lake bordered by Germany, Austria and Switzerland. More than 4.5 million people in the region rely on the regulations to protect the lake, as it is a major source of their drinking water. New Zealand is also renowned for its pristine lakes and waterways and we are proud that our technology does no harm.
SHARING RESEARCH TO CREATE CLEANER ENGINES
Evinrude engineers have published many award-winning peer reviewed technical research papers on Evinrude E-TEC technology. These technical papers contribute to the ongoing worldwide research on combustion engines and are preserved in permanent collections further exemplifying our leadership and credibility in engine technology. Sharing our technical research allows other researchers to benefit from the scientific technical discoveries made during the development of our advanced engine technologies.
WELCOMED IN ALL NEW ZEALAND WATERS
EXHAUST EMISSIONS OF CLEAN-TECHNOLOGY ENGINES
Built to keep the air and water cleaner for you and the next generation of boaters, E-TEC engines produce fewer emissions overall than the closest competitor, which makes them collectively the cleanest combustion outboard engines on the market.
UP TO 99%
LESS CARBON MONOXIDE AT IDLE AND TROLLING SPEEDS
Evirude E-TEC stratified charged direct-fuel injection results in the very lowest carbon monoxide emissions at idle.
UP TO 16%
BETTER FUEL ECONOMY
Maximize your range on a tank of gas with minimal fuel burned and minimal money spent. With direct fuel injection, virtually every drop of fuel is used, offering up to 16% better fuel economy.
NO MIXING OF OIL AND GAS,NO
OIL CHANGES, NO USED OIL AND FILTERS
It is estimated that in the United States alone, nearly 200 million gallons of used oil is improperly disposed of by dumping in the ground, throwing into the trash, and pouring down storm sewers and drains. Oil and gasoline do not mix in an Evinrude E-TEC engine and you never have to worry
about disposing of dirty motor oil and filters.
OIL AND EMISSIONS ACCOUNTABILITY
Disposing of used motor oil from a four-stroke creates additional environmental impacts as most of the oil gets burned or used in industrial processes that are not accounted for in the exhaust emissions of the engine. E-TEC emissions include oil and fuel consumption and are among the very lowest of all outboard brands.
MEETING EMISSIONS STANDARDS IN THE LAB AND ON THE WATER
Evinrude pioneered the very first device specifically designed to quantify on-water exhaust emissions. The Marine Portable Bag Sampling System, known as the MPSS, is capable of accurately measuring and quantifying exhaust emissions from boats operated on the water. We designed and built the MPSS, which was used in an industry-wide EPA test program, to determine greenhouse gas emissions from a variety of marine engines and products.
BRINGING NEXT GENERATION BIO-FUELS TO THE BOATING CONSUMER
The marine industry came together to test, approve and help commercialize a next-generation bio-fuel, bio-butanol. Evinrude engineers led research into advanced bio-fuels working under the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory and with support and collaboration across the entire marine industry. Over the course of five years, hundreds of pages of peer-reviewed research papers were published, and thousands of hours of testing completed which led to the approval of bio-butanol fuel blends. This collective and proactive research and testing program has brought forward a next-generation compatible bio-fuel alternative to ethanol that is beginning to make its way to fueling stations across the United States.
RECOVERING ENERGY FROM OUR PROCESSES
Evinrude recovers energy from outboard engine testing to meet the heating needs of its engine endurance test center. Evinrude built an indoor engine endurance test center which contains 600,000 gallons (2.3 million liters) of water. Up to eight outboard engines can be operated at full throttle 24/hrs per day. An energy recovery heating system was installed to capture energy from outboard engines heating the building in winter months. 100% of the needs of the space are heated specifically through the energy recovery mode.
SAVING AND RECYCLING WATER
Evinrude has saved over 22 million gallons (83 million liters) of water and hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in water, sewage and associated wastewater treatment fees.Energy recovery systems were installed to use excess energy from our facility’s engine water test system to heat occupied space and other processes throughout the facility. Recycled filter carbon is used through an exchange service which minimizes waste. A water source heat pump was installed to leverage the excess energy produced from test engines. Heat ex-changers were installed to transfer energy from process water to an outdoor boat launch test area to prevent freezing in winter months.Closed-loop water filtration system used in the Evinrude outboard endurance test center.
Evinrude has received numerous awards in recognition of our environmental leadership. The Business Friend of the Environment Award was received for our development of the Marine Portable Bag Sampling System used to determine on-water greenhouse gas emissions. A
second award was received for energy recovery systems used in the Evinrude Engine Endurance Test Center. We received the Earth Day Sustainability Award for the development of a closed- loop water system used throughout engineering and production. Evinrude has also received the Green Masters designation two years in a row, recognizing sustainability efforts throughout our production facility.
