Gene started his association with boating at the age of 3 when his father bought the first family boat.
Gene recalls fishing trips and learning to water-ski on family camping holidays on Motuhoa Island in the Tauranga Harbour.
His love of fishing grew and he purchased his own boat during his first year of college spending many days and nights exploring and fishing the Tauranga Harbour and, later on, the surrounding Islands of the Bay of Plenty.
He purchased his second boat after starting a building apprenticeship & 27 years later he owns a private building company in Tauranga.
It was at this stage that he joined the Tauranga Water Ski Club & started to compete in slalom water ski competitions and learned to barefoot.
He bought his first dedicated ski boat, a kwick-craft aluminium hull, which he re-powered with a near new Evinrude 150 Intruder. Yet, he still hadn’t lost the love for fishing and he was skippering his fathers boat with his mates and entering tournaments. Gene and his mates won the 1994 Tauranga One Base Tournament with 3 King Fish all over 27kg.
In the same year he competed in the Hamilton Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic for the 1st time, in the family class, and returned in 1998 to win the novice class and also win the 225 HP class in the main race. He has competed nearly every year since and has come away with many class wins.
Just over 10 years ago Gene a bought a new Bullet 1750 ski boat and continued to social ski and race.
In 2017 he wanted to re-power the 1750 and chose the new Evinrude G2 200 HO which he and the family are enjoying both socially and on the racing circuit. On its debut they achieved a 2nd overall and had a great Bridge to Bridge breaking the class record by 1 minute & 35 seconds. They are also getting great results in the current racing season.
"We are looking forward to a bright future with Evinrude NZ"
